Erasing The Stigma on Pregnancy
You miss your period. You get a little scared, a little excited. You pee on the stick. Those two lines show up. Maybe you're really excited! Maybe you want to shout it from the rooftops! But society advises you not to. A little later on, you get some morning sickness, and mood swings. You feel bloated and don't want to wear normal clothes anymore because they don't feel right. People notice, but you aren't supposed to tell them you're going to have a baby.
Why? Mainly, the risk of miscarriage. According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 10-25% of pregnancies end in miscarriage up to 13 weeks.
I can't help but wonder, why is early pregnancy and miscarriage taboo?
I know when I was pregnant with my first baby, Orin, I felt miserable for about 90% of my pregnancy. I loved having support from my family and friends that we told early. It was great for people to not assume I was hungover while I was throwing up in my car outside a store in the morning. It was great to have people happy, and excited with me, not having to contain my joy.
I know firsthand that miscarriage sucks.
In that absolutely horrible time, it is AMAZING to have support.
When did miscarriage become something we can't talk about? WHY is it something that women are just supposed to get over without support?
10-25% is a big statistic. This happens to women WAY more than people think.
So, today, I am starting this conversation.
Hi, I'm Marcie. I have a very active toddler who will be 1 on July 31st. I am currently pregnant with baby #2, (who should arrive sometime in March/April) and I cannot wait to share my journey this time!
I have to say, I was inspired by Becca who is going to meet her 3rd baby boy in November! She announced her pregnancy earlier than most people as well, and I have loved following her pregnancy journey this time around! (Make sure to check out her blog!)
