Life With Two Under 2

I have now been a Mama to two kiddos for 3 weeks, and they have been quite the whirlwind!

Kalia's birth was pretty quick and easy. She was born on March 9th, we were released from the hospital 2 days later on March 11th. The following Wednesday was the first day that we were going to be able to spend as a little family of 4 on our own, and I was so looking forward to it. Then, we got a call from the kids' pediatrician that morning that we needed to come in for a weight check for Kalia. Nothing out of the normal. We get to the office to find out she has a rare genetic disease called Medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency, otherwise known as MCADD.

They set us up with a specialist who just happened to be in town that day otherwise we would have had to make an emergency trip to Denver...on the day that just so happened to be the biggest snowstorm in YEARS. We definitely lucked out on that one.

By the time we got home from those appointments, we were all exhausted. The next day, Zac felt a cold coming on and apparently so did Orin. Friday morning Orin woke up with a 100° fever. Kalia had another weight check that day, and we were able to get Orin seen after her.

I am so grateful for our pediatricians office. They were getting nonstop calls that day from just about every worried parent in the valley with a sick kiddo. Orin tested positive for Influenza. Since Zac had a cough they recommended he get tested as well at his doctors. Big surprise, he was positive too.
At this point, the day was pretty much over, and Kalia had quarantined ourselves in our bedroom. I contacted my midwife who put me on Tamiflu preventively.

It seems like that was months ago...  Baby girl and I managed to escape the flu, but it was not easy. This is the first big illness that Orin has ever gotten, and to hear him be miserable, fussy and just want cuddles was so hard because I couldn't do anything for him. I felt so helpless. Daddy is probably his best friend now though ;)

Zac getting sick and having to care for Orin caused him to have to take a couple more days off of work, and I am grateful for that. Today was his first day back and because i had him home for 2 weeks i didn't feel overwhelmed to have two babies to take care of. Both Zac and Orin have made full recoveries, by the way. I would say today has gone pretty well considering I was able to get this blog post done!

MCADD is something that Kalia will live with forever. Basically, she is missing an enzyme that allows her to process certain fats in food. This means, right now she HAS to eat every 2-4 hours and if she goes longer than 4 she would have to be admitted to the hospital for IV fluids. Once she gets older, it just means she can never fast. Because Zac and I are carriers for this, there is a 25% chance with every pregnancy I have that the baby will end up with MCADD. Orin lucked out. 1 in 17,000 people have MCADD, and 1 in 70 are carriers. It's really rare, but easily manageable.

So, this is my life as of now. I feel like superwoman at this point for being able to deal with all of this now that I've had time to process it!

I will have Kalia's full birth story up later this week- I just felt like posting this first because I've explained it so much recently, wanted to have somewhere to send people for more info. So stay tuned!
